Not Going Back

Edith is still out of the coop. She is acting like she is queen of the farm and she is not going back. That’s perfectly fine with me. If she does not want to go back, that’s fine. She is the one that did not want to leave the coop because of the roosters. The roosters are not bothering her now. I do not know what changed but something did. She is all over the farm and does not act like she is scared at all. That’s fine with me. I like rather her be out as long as the roosters leave her alone. I keep thinking I will see her back in the shop soon, but so far she has not come back into the shop. Edith keeps me on her toes. 

Make Up Your Mind

Edith, make up your mind. I went in the chicken coop to give her some fresh water and she decided she is done with the coop and runs out squawking the whole way. Of course that grabbed some attention. Since she is out of the coop and has been in the coop for so long, there is the pecking order. She runs out of the coop and starts attacking some hens. I watched her for a while. The roosters were leaving her alone so I thought she was good. She did not want to go back in the coop. I can’t blame her. I wouldn’t want that either. She decided to get out of there. She still hangs out in there sometimes but so do the other chickens. For now, she decided she wanted out. 

Out of Character

Earl has been staying in the shop often these days. That is totally out of character for him. He loves to roam around and dig in the dirt. He loves to be out and about chasing birds and Jelly for some reason. I do not know what is going on with him. He is happy hanging out with Peanut Butter in the shop. Jelly is out and about most of the time these days. I feel like that’s because him and Earl do not get along but I don’t know why. I can find him in all kinds of different places around the farm. For now, Earl is happy just lounging around in the shop. 

Poor Mattie

Mattie was sore for a few days after his fence incident. He was traumatized after that. He has been staying closer to his momma. He is doing better and does not seem as sore. He is starting to run around again and play more. He does continue to stay away from that gate. His face is healing well and he is not limping anymore. It broke my heart to see him like that. I’m so glad he is feeling better. 

The lambs and the labs

These lambs are some of the cutest and silliest things on the farm. Their pen backs up to what we call the dog yard which is where the dogs are when they are outside. I thought the labs would bother the lambs. Daisy can be intrusive to them. She just did by he fence and barks and them or whines. As I was in the kitchen tonight I watched Bill and Ted running back and forth by the fence. As I watched the labs, Daisy and Bella were running the fence with them. They looked like them were having the best time running back and forth. Lambs don’t just run, they jump and run, jump and run. It was the funniest thing to watch and it warmed my heart. I needed that after the traumatizing fence incident. 

Stuck in the fence

I got home from work today a little earlier than normal which was nice. I started my normal routine. I then called my grandma. As I was on the phone, I looked outside. I’m not sure what made me look outside but I did. I saw what looked like a goat at first in the little alley way and thought that was weird. I look closer and realize it’s Mattie. I told my grandma I had to go and I ran outside. Mattie’s foot was stuck in the gate and he could not get free. He was half under the gate which told me he had been there a while. I worked and worked and got him free. Then he wouldn’t get up, so I had to physically pick him up to get him on his feet. Luckily for me, I wasn’t that heavy. He stumbled around and was disoriented. Noma was standing by the gate watching me. I know that poor Mattie had been under there a while. He was exhausted. He must have fought to get out for quite a while. He face is banged up and swollen. He did bray at me once I got him free. He also tried to kick at me when I touched a tender spot. He definitely had some bumps and bruises. He is sore and a little traumatized. Noma loved on him like I had not seen before when he got free. This poor little guy had a bad day. He isn’t going near that gate now. It broke my heart to see him like that. He will be sore a while, but hopefully he bounces back quickly. He was hungry and thirsty when he got freed finally. I hope to never see that again. I’ve been hovering over him since I got home. 

Edith Escapes

While we had company here, they were helping us feed and water which was amazing. Michael took some water to Edith. Edith decided that was the perfect opportunity to get out of the coop. I’m not sure why she did that. She knows what happens. I wasn’t worried about it because I knew she would go back in there. It wasn’t 10 minutes later, Rowdy the rooster starts running from across the pasture toward her. I knew what was fixing to happen. That rooster got to her twice before I could get to her. She saw me and ran right back into the coop. I don’t know what it is about her, but those roosters will not stay away from her.
