May 13, 2025

So, it got hot today. Not a little hot, like 101 degrees hot. I definitely was not ready for that. Feeding and watering animals is no fun when it is hot like that and being in West Texas, it will get worse. The animals did not seem ready for it either. With the amount of water that was gone, I know they were not ready. The pigs used all their water to lay in, and the horses used theirs to kick around to cool off. The cows and donkeys drank all of theirs. All I can say is, I am glad we fill all the troughs daily to make sure the animals have what they need, regardless of how they use it.
The cats were all home. They were hiding and out of the sun to stay as cool as possible. I know they do not like it, but they are so small they can find places to stay cool. These cats have been here for years, so they know what to do.
I was happy to see there were no hens in the shop. They are getting smarter. When it is hot out like that, the possibility of them overheating is good. We have had several do that. I would like to avoid that at all costs.
We had a windstorm blow in about the time I started feeding. The wind was going nuts. The cows just decided to stay where they were laying down in the hay and weather the storm there. They do not panic; they just stay put. They know they are going to be okay.
The little goats are a hoot to watch. Those 3 fight so often over food, but I know they love each other. It is funny to watch them. They would get more to eat if they would stop fighting. Porky gets most of it because he is busy eating and not fighting with the other 2. He is the smart one.
The chickens know where the cool spot is in the sheep pen. They were all over there today. That is where they will be for the next several months to stay cool. They are smart little animals.
Olga was on the eggs. She was getting a nice breeze in the corner where she is. Eggs take 21 days to hatch. I think we are at a week or a little over. It won't be long, I know that.
Tinkerbelle pulled her bowl of food into her shelter to eat so she would not be in the wind/dust storm. Now that is smart.
The pigs were all muddy. I could see they were all taking advantage of having the mud holes in this hot weather. I am glad that is the case.
Jasper's abscess looks healed up. There is a small scar there. I hope that is the end of that for a bit. He still wants nothing to do with me right now. He knows the cycle.
The horses were all getting along. Jeb was not trying to run anyone. For that I am grateful. It is too hot for that mess.
