I saw this on Facebook today and wanted to share. There are several groups on Facebook trying to raise awareness of pigs and the myths that go with them. When we discuss pot belly pigs, a lot of people think they stay small, they don’t stay small. They can get to be 60-200 pounds. They need vet care. They don’t sweat so they have to have a ton of water around them to stay cooler. They need to be outside some to dig and root around. That’s what pigs do. When they aren’t fixed they do have behavioral problems and girls have a very high rate of cancer. They are very sensitive animals. They need to be in pairs to keep them happy. They love belly rubs. Most of these animals are rehomed within the first year because they get bigger than promised. Pigs grieve for the families that don’t want them anymore. They cry real tears. They are intelligent animals. They need their owners to spend time with them daily. They are wonderful pets. You can litter box train them like a cat. They need love and care just like any other animal. I don’t have much experience but I do have 7 pigs and they are super smart. They love their routines. They get bored and can be destructive when bored. They are susceptible to having diseases we get like the flu. They need to be wormed at least every 6 months. The list can go on and on. What people don’t see a lot is how many of these babies need homes and need help due to being rehome for abandoned just like dogs and cats. It’s really sad. They are wonderful pets. Like I said, I have 7. They all have different personalities and are unique in their own way.
